About One hundred and fifty thousand babies are born with sickle cell disease (SCD) every year in Nigeria, and Nigeria has the highest global rate of Sickle Cell Disease. The majority of children born with SCD in Nigeria die before the age of 5 years due to poor health and social support programs. It is estimated that 50–80% of children born with SCD in Africa die before five years. OCHF's local physician and the team, supported by visiting pediatricians and Sickle Cell Disease partners, provide primary sickle cell disease primary health care to all SCD children and free genotype tests to eligible adults.
